International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). IARC’s mission is to coordinate and conduct research on the causes of human cancer, the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and to develop scientific strategies for cancer prevention and control. The Agency is involved in both epidemiological and laboratory research, as well as prevention implementation research, and disseminates scientific information through publications, meetings, courses and fellowships, and other training.

Previous experience relevant to the tasks:

IARC researchers have been involved in several large randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of several new screening strategies (e.g. human papillomavirus [HPV] testing for cervical screening) and treatment technologies for cervical precancers (e.g. cryotherapy and thermal ablation). The IARC team has extensive experience in evaluating the cancer screening programmes in the EU Member States and preparing the first and second reports on the status of implementation of EU Council recommendations in 28 EU Member States. IARC was involved in drafting the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer screening. IARC initiated a global data repository (CanScreen5) for the systematic collection of information and data from cancer screening programmes in different countries.
